Description of Counselor/Practice

* While based in California, I provide virtual therapy to anyone residing in Washington as I am also licensed here. * Hello! I'm so glad you're here. The world these days seems even scarier than before, and I'm so glad you've taken the first step toward getting some support. My name is Emily. Yes, I also go by Dr. Hu. No, I do not own a TARDIS. :) I'm a member of Thrive Psychology Group, a private practice in Los Angeles that primarily focuses on serving the needs of professional women. Our founder established the group to address the specific needs of women who are frequently oppressed by our patriarchal society. When I joined, I decided to up the ante: as a bisexual Asian American woman, I focus my practice on all marginalized groups, especially LGBTQ+ folx and people of color. Having also done all the code-switching and identity-juggling that comes with being an immigrant, I also enjoy discussing bicultural stress and what it might mean to find a balance between the identities before and after the hyphen when you're X-American. All right, so that's the context. What about the specific issues you're looking to work on? I'm primarily a trauma and addictions specialist. I have extensive training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), all gold-standard treatments for trauma and PTSD. For people in addiction recovery, I operate from a relapse prevention model and a holistic approach that takes into account the whole person's history and emotional struggles, not just the addictive behaviors. In addition, I'm also experienced treating depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties (especially people recovering from narcissistic partners or parents, and folks looking to set better boundaries), life transitions, and grief. As a working woman on my own family-building journey, I also specialize in therapy for people considering or undergoing alternative reproductive paths such as IUI/IVF, egg freezing, and using donor gametes. Do we sound like a good match? If so, shoot me an email or head on over to my website, where you can learn more about me, watch videos of me talking about the various issues I'm passionate about, and book a free 30-minute consultation. I'm so excited to meet you!
