Description of Counselor/Practice

~~~~About Me~~~~ Hi there! I’m Yeji. In 2016, I embarked on a life-changing journey, traveling thousands of miles from Pohang, a beautiful coastal city in South Korea, to the United States. This move was fueled by my deep curiosity about the human mind and a childhood calling to help the unheard find their voice. As an international student, I experienced firsthand how our identities shape our experiences. Transitioning from being part of the ethnic majority to a minority, from a native speaker to a non-native speaker, and from a citizen to a temporary resident reshaped my perspective on cultural identity. Now, as a first-generation Korean therapist, I bring these experiences into my work, helping clients navigate the complexities of cultural adjustment, the nuances of identity, and their impact on mental health. ~~~~My Experience~~~~ I hold a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa. Much of my professional experience has been in college counseling settings, where I work primarily with young adults navigating a wide range of mental health challenges. My expertise includes supporting individuals struggling with complex trauma, attachment issues, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and career concerns. I have worked with clients with varying levels of severity, from mild challenges to chronic suicidal thoughts. While I specialize in these areas, I acknowledge my limitations in working with active psychosis and severe bipolar disorders. I take great joy in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including immigrants, international students, first-generation professionals, and those exploring the intersections of their cultural identities. ~~~~My Approach~~~~ My primary therapeutic orientation is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), supported by training in Gestalt therapy, psychodrama, and trauma-informed care. I take a holistic approach to address the mind, body, and soul, aiming to help you achieve balanced well-being. In our work together, we’ll explore where you are now, where you’ve been, and where you want to go. By examining your internal beliefs and revisiting your past, we’ll uncover patterns contributing to your struggles. Through mindfulness, you’ll learn to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment, gaining clarity and calm in the present moment. My goal is to help you identify the values that matter most and align your actions with them. I hope you come to see yourself as someone worth knowing and recognize that life is, indeed, worth living. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~I offer a free 15-minute virtual consultation to help you determine if I’m the right fit for your therapy needs.
